Colombian Protestant Churches Document Their Suffering and Their Hope

Colombian Protestant Churches Document their Suffering and their Hope, Edition 2

A report of human rights violations against churches and their peacebuilding initiatives.
Jueves 13 septiembre 2007, por Janna Hunter-Bowman ·

During the report period of 2006, program volunteers documented 68 cases of human rights violations, with 223 victims and 289 individual acts of aggression. This report notes 16 homicides of men, women and children, 147 death threats, 103 cases of displacement, 10 attempted homicides, four cases of torture and other human rights violations.

Also documented in this report are several significant social restoration and peacebuilding initiatives undertaken by Protestant churches in the past year. Additionally, the report highlights the initial findings of the religious rights monitoring project of violations of religious freedom and equality. The 2006 report concludes with a series of recommendations for Colombian, U.S. and Canadian governments.

We invite you to share the accounts detailed in this report and respond in your life and place, as you are able. Pray for the victims, the perpetrators and the peacemakers. Advocate—speak truth to government officials through sharing the recommendations included in the report. In these and other ways you can nourish the seeds of peace already sown, in faith-filled courage and sacrifice, in the midst of violence.

Sincerely,

Jenny Neme, Director - Justapaz

Ricardo Esquivia, Director - Peace Commission, CEDECOL
